12 Mar Ugg…
“Ugg” – my 3-year-old daughter’s favorite exclamation. Let’s go ahead and call her Little Lady. Little Lady says it when she’s angry. She says it when she’s been misunderstood or misinterpreted. She says it when she doesn’t get her way.
And the other day, she said it at Costco.
She wasn’t angry or misunderstood. Her words hadn’t been the victim of misinterpretation. No, on this Costco trip, she said it all because of a shmugly velvety Cinderella pajama dress.
She wanted it. Badly. We darted in front of oncoming Costco aisle traffic to get to it so she could see it up close and feel it between her fingers.
I was expecting a tantrum but today, she surprised me. There was no whining. No begging. Today, she simply used her favorite exclamation- “Ugg” – followed with a resigned, “I gotta do mow chose.” (more chores)
I laughed because it was so unexpected. To think that a 3-year-old could understand that buying something she wanted was up to her and her efforts. Not me and mine. What?! I assured her there were plenty of chores to be done so she could earn enough money to call that ugly thing her own. She’s still working on it…5 bucks to go.
In the meantime, I’m going to go ahead and chalk that up as a ‘parental pay day,’ to steal a phrase from my mother. Appropriately named for days (or more accurately ‘moments’) when your kids behave like they actually do hear the words coming out of your mouth.
That little pay day was well-timed considering the fact that two of my boys just discovered Pokemon cards and have blown months worth of their hard-earned money on these pointless piles of dumb cards. Seriously? Pokemon is still a thing?! Sigh. Little Lady may have the ‘work = money to buy’ concept down, but the concept of not throwing your money away on worthless crap?! My boys have a long way to go.
Who knew the phrase, ‘you win some, you lose some’ was sooooo perfect for parenthood?
